Memory #3: Behind the Gym

It's a dull autumn day in England and Jill is crying behind the gym because after being bullied by a group of older kids known as Them. Eustace runs into her, almost literally, and she yells at him a bit. Apparently he used to be kind of a weasel, but she and everybody else at school have noticed a change in him this term. After she calms down, he ends up telling her about Narnia, and they decide to try to get there, but are interrupted by Them. Jill and Eustace take one look at each other and run for it through the bushes, winding up trapped by a high stone wall at the edge of the school grounds; there's a door in the wall, which is always locked, although rumor has it that once someone found it open. Eustace says it's sure to be no good, but he tries it anyway, and it opens -- but instead of opening up onto a wet moor, it opens onto a sunlit wood!
They hesitate in the doorway for a minute, but the bullies are coming up behind them, and Eustace grabs Jill's hand and pulls her through, instantly cutting off the sounds of their pursuers as they plunge into a totally different world. They walk, Eustace still holding onto her hand, through a wood of enormous cedars, which grow in every direction. It's possible to see a long way, because there's no undergrowth, just level turf underfoot and huge cedars and brilliant sunshine, and jewel bright birds darting overhead, making sounds that are more like advanced music than birdsong. There is no wind, but the air is cool and clear, and there's a feeling of emptiness and loneliness.
