Jill, Eustace and Puddleglum have been traveling across Ettinsmoor for about ten days, and have just reached the North edge of the moor, where it changes to rocky, mountainous country. They walk down a steep slope and end up at the edge of a deep ravine, with a river full of rapids and waterfalls running along the bottom. They're heading North, and it runs East and West, cutting them off.

Then they see a giant's bridge, a huge single arch across the ravine. Jill opines that it was probably made by the same giants that built the city they're looking for -- Eustace agrees with her, and they cross the bridge, although Puddleglum doesn't trust it. From the top of the bridge they can see that it continues on the other side as a road, and riding down that road are two strangers -- a beautiful lady in green, on a white horse, and a knight in black armor with his visor down, on a black horse.

The lady is very friendly, and Jill tells her they're looking for the ruined city of the giants. Puddleglum doesn't trust her at all, and cuts Jill off from telling the lady why they're doing it. The lady continues on, as friendly as ever, and tells the travelers that if they carry on down the road, they'll find the Castle Harfang, inhabited by friendly giants who will give them food and lodging. The children thank her, Puddleglum bows very stiffly, and the strangers go on their way, the knight never having said a word.
