Jill, Puddleglum and Eustace are having a lunch of cold venison in the great hall at Harfang, at an ordinary-sized table near the fire when Puddlelglum suddenly freezes and tells them not to eat another bite. It takes a little while for the children, especially Jill, to be quite as horrified as Puddleglum, who is sick and faint and starts wailing that they've brought Aslan's anger upon them by not attending the signs and that they're under a curse, but they get there, and basically it is a gruesome experience for everyone involved. But they have to stay in the Great Hall until all the giants have left, pretending to still be eating, because they're trying to slip away unnoticed while the majority of the giant court is out hunting.

Once the giants have cleared out of the hall, the travelers head down to the kitchen, which is where they're hoping to escape out of, because the cook always leaves the back door open for the cat. They wait for the servants to finish cleaning up after lunch, but soon realize that there's one old giantess who doesn't plan to leave at all. However, she decides to take a nap, and they wait on tenterhooks for her to fall asleep. To take her mind off waiting, Jill starts to read through a cookbook that's lying open, where she soon discovers a recipe for Man, right next to one for Marsh-wiggle. Luckily, the giantess starts snoring at this point, and the party is able to sneak out of the kitchen where they were apparently about to be cooked for the Autumn Feast.

Then comes the most dangerous part of the escape, because they have to walk down the road to get away from Harfang, which is in full view of all the front windows, and Eustace and Jill, unfortunately, are wearing bright red, blue and green clothing (that also happen to be far too thin for the weather). Even if they went off the road, there would be no cover -- the ground is all coarse grass, pebbles and flat stones. They try to walk casually toward their goal, the steps of the City Ruinous... and then they hear hunting horns. The hunting party has returned. Puddleglum says not to run until he gives the word. They walk a few more steps, and then there's a clamour of giant voices -- they've been spotted.

Puddleglum tells them to run, and they do, Jill encumbered by long skirts, hounds in pursuit. Jill doesn't know what they're going to do when they reach the steps, but she isn't giving it a lot of thought -- she's just running as hard as she can. Puddleglum reaches the lowest step first -- and disappears into a hole at the bottom of it. Eustace follows him in, and, a minute later, so does Jill. They block up the entrance with stones so the dogs can't follow them in, join hands, and head deeper into the cave.

Although they had to crawl in flat on their stomachs, they soon find that they can stand up. They walk quite a long way, until Jill has lost all sense of direction, at which point Puddleglum and then the two children fall down a skree slope, bruising and bloodying and mostly burying themselves. It's the worst moment Jill has ever known in her life. Puddleglum has lost his tinderbox, so there's no light whatsoever, and they lie there quietly in the dark, knowing there's nothing to be done and too exhausted to panic about it, for a long time.

* GIANTS SUCK!!1!
* That was basically cannibalism, I hate myself and want to die.
* +500 claustrophobia
* +50 desire to wear practical clothing
* This is going to give her nightmares for multiple reasons.
* Really the only comfort she has after this memory is "I know I didn't die here, because I died in a train crash later on."
