Memory #9: Mainly About Dwarfs
Nov. 4th, 2012 04:26 pmGame: Monster Battles with Nimue
Form: a small vial of water, with a ribbon in your team's color wrapped around it
Uses: 1/1 taken (Jill)
Type: Significant Neutral
Tirian, Eustace, Jill, Jewel and Puzzle (the humans in Calormene disguise and Puzzle in the lion skin) meet about thirty Dwarfs, with spades and mattocks, marching along a rough road at night, with two Calormene guards at the head and rear of the column. Tirian steps out onto the road and demands to know where they are taking the Dwarfs -- the guards reply that it is to the salt mines in Calormen. Tirian asks the Dwarfs why they would possibly assent to this, and they say it's under Aslan's orders.
Tirian tells the Dwarfs that they've been cheated by the Ape, and shows them Puzzle in the lion skin as his evidence. The guards catch on that he's not really a Calormene lord at this point, and ask for the password, and Tirian says, while drawing his sword, "This is my password. The light is dawning, the lie is broken. Now guard thee, miscreant, for I am Tirian of Narnia."
Unsurprisingly, there is a sword fight. Tirian and Eustace each kill one, and the dwarves take the other two. Afterward, though, the Dwarfs are very surly and refuse to believe in Aslan anymore, nor that the children are from another world, nor that Tirian is King -- besides which, they say they don't want a King anymore anyway. Everybody gets very upset, but the Dwarfs don't care, and make up the slogan, "The Dwarfs are for the Dwarfs," and head home. The party also begins to head back to their base, silently. Jill is disgusted with the Dwarfs, and also very impressed with Eustace's victory over the guard -- she feels almost shy.
* This is on the negative side of neutral -- there are some victories here, but they feel hollow.
* Eustace was kind of badass here...
* -50 bothered by violence
* Even in the dark, Jewel is gorgeous. Unicorns are gorgeous.
* No real understanding of what prompted the Dwarfs behaviour.
* This is hundreds of years after The Silver Chair.
