Jill and Eustace walk out of a wood and find themselves at the very edge of a cliff. Eustace yanks Jill back from the edge, and she gets very annoyed about it. She's not at all afraid of heights and can see that he is and despises him for it. So she stands very close to the edge and says, "What's the matter?" and looks down.

This turns out to be a terrible plan, because the cliff is higher than any cliff in the world -- far, far above the highest clouds in the sky -- impossibly high. She decides maybe standing so close to the edge wasn't so clever after all, and tries to take a step back from it, but can't. Eustace tries to pull her back, but she's lost control of her limbs, and they struggle there for a moment. She manages to wrench herself out of his hands; at the same moment, he gives a terrified scream and falls over the edge.

Immediately, an enormous, brightly coloured animal rushes to the edge of the cliff and starts blowing. It seems, somehow, to be blowing Eustace away. Jill is lying on the ground, nearly fainting, but she can see what's happening, so she turns and looks at the creature. It's a lion, which finishes blowing and walks away.

Jill starts talking to herself a bit, about how this is a dream and not her fault, and then she remembers Eustace's scream and starts to cry.
