Game: Stories with Scheherazade
Form: a little book with five empty pages. Pull a page out to get a memory!
Uses: 5/5 untaken
Type: Significant Neutral

Jill, Eustace, Puddleglum and Prince Rilian (who she doesn't yet know is the prince -- she just thinks of him as the Knight in this memory -- and who is dressed all in black and sort of looks like Hamlet and has a slightly off expression on his face at all times) are sitting down at a table to eat lunch. They're in a beautiful room with a fire burning and tapestries on the walls, but Jill is aware they're deep underground.

The Knight tells them all how he has amnesia and goes berserk for an hour every night and is fathoms deep in love with his Lady, especially since she is the only one who can keep his madness in check via this super awesome and definitely not in any way sketchy chair. He also tells them about how she is soon going to end his enchantment by getting him to invade and take over some other random country, which is really okay because she is so awesome and he is going to do everything she tells him when she is his queen, and also isn't it hilarious that the country he's invading isn't ever going to see it coming?

During this dubious speech, he spends a lot of time calling Puddleglum "Frog-foot" and Jill "little maid" and "little lady," and laughing inanely and patting her on the head, so that she unsurprisingly comes to the conclusion that he's an insufferable, spineless douchebag. However, after the meal he becomes serious, telling them that his madness is almost upon him, and inviting them to either sit with him through it or go to the other rooms in his apartments and make themselves comfortable.

The three travelers go and get washed up and discuss what to do, eventually deciding to go see if they can learn anything from the Knight's fit, although Jill votes to stay away. They go into the room with the silver chair and find him bound to it at the ankles, knees, elbows, wrists and waist. He warns them not to loose his bonds, saying that if free, he would first go berserk and then turn into a loathsome serpent. They all agree there is no way they'd free him.

A change comes over the Knight -- he seems to be in horrible pain, and begs them to let him go. He speaks of the outside world and things he's forgotten; he says he's sane now for only an hour; he entreats and threatens them. And then he begs them in the name of Aslan. Jill knows that Aslan had told her at the beginning of their journey to help the first person they meet who calls on his name. They all know it. Puddleglum says they've got to do it, even if it means their deaths. There's a moment of sickening indecision.

Suddenly Jill says, "All right. Let's get it over. Good-bye, everyone...!" They all shake hands, and Eustace and Puddleglum free the Knight. He immediately grabs his sword and turns around and smashes the chair. After that he knows who he is, and is way less spineless and silly -- they tell him he's been captive for ten years, and that is father is alive but very old. He hears the Earthmen coming and tells the three travelers to stay -- he'll fool the Earthmen if he can. He throws open the door, and the memory ends.
