Jill is asleep in a dark tower, and grumpily wakes up to the news that she and Eustace have to fly somewhere new with the owls in the middle of the night. She notes that Eustace isn't tired, but doesn't understand that it's the effect of Narnia on him, since he's been there before. Jill keeps having to pinch herself to stay awake, even flying through the night on Glimfeather's back. Finally, the owls land in a flat place without trees, and Glimfeather calls for Puddleglum, saying that it's "the Lion's business!" A light appears and approaches, and a person who Jill can't see well, but who seems to be all arms and legs (and extremely pessimistic, from his conversation) comes and leads her and Eustace away. Jill is passing out on her feet, and tries to wake up a little to say goodbye to the owls, but is barely aware of her surroundings. Thankfully, the strange new person ushers her and Eustace through a low door, into someplace where there's something soft and warm to lie down on, and she falls asleep at once.
When she wakes up, Eustace informs her that they're in the wigwam of a Marsh-wiggle, not that he can tell her what one is. They go outside to find themselves on a great, wide plain divided into countless little islands by channels of water. There are various waterfowl in abundance, and huge swathes of rushes. There are also a lot of wigwams scattered across it. They look around and spot the Marsh-wiggle, who is fishing about fifty feet away from them, with his back turned. When he turns around, they can see that he has a long, thin, serious face, greeny-gray hair that is flat rather than round, so that it looks more like tiny reeds, and a complexion the colour of mud. He proceeds to be very gloomy, and introduces himself as Puddleglum. Prophesying minor doom all the while, he gives Eustace his tinderbox and sends the children off to have a wash and light a fire, which they do.
Presently, Puddleglum comes back with a dozen eels, lights his pipe, and sets about cooking breakfast while they make their plans. They find out that Puddleglum is to go with them, and that they'll have to head across Ettinsmoor, which is giant country. Jill is not particularly pleased at the prospect of meeting giants, but notices that Eustace has turned green, which makes her feel better about herself. Puddleglum continues to say extremely pessimistic things about the giants and the journey and Eustace loses his temper, saying that he and Jill can go alone if Puddleglum feels as hopeless as that. Jill tells him to shut up and not be an ass, terrified that Puddleglum will take Eustace seriously, but the Marsh-wiggle isn't at all offended and says this kind of journey is just what he needs to sober up and stop being such a flighty, high-spirited fellow. (Apparently he is sincere.)
Then breakfast is ready, so they stop planning and eat; the food is delicious and the children have two large helpings each, so even Puddleglum can't deny that they enjoy it — he does, however, fall back on saying things like, "what's food for wiggles may be poison for wiggles, I shouldn't wonder." They spend the rest of the day packing for their journey. Puddleglum and Eustace are to carry swords, but Jill only has her knife — she almost starts a fight over this, but as soon as she and Eustace start bickering, Puddleglum rubs his hands together and says, "Ah, there you are. I thought as much. That's what usually happens on adventures," which makes them both shut up. They all go to bed early, but Jill sleeps badly because Puddleglum is such a snorer.
* Oh, so that's how they met Puddleglum.
* Flying by owl is probably more fun when it's warm out and you're awake.
* EELS ARE DELICIOUS
* She was kind of a brat but so was Eustace.
