Memory #18: A Good Night's Work
Jan. 22nd, 2013 11:23 pmGame: Two Part Trauma with Mira
Form: little clusters of heart-shaped mini-apples
Uses: 1/7 taken (Jill)
Type: Significant Positive
Jill is woken by Tirian shaking her. Once she and Eustace have got out of their bunks, he briefs them on their mission, and they creep away into the woods. Tirian guides them while the sky is clearly visible, but they get turned around once they're under branches; it's Jill who sets them right again. When Tirian realizes that she's the best pathfinder out of the lot of them, he puts her on point, and she creeps ahead. She's very good at going quietly through the woods. The ground begins to slope up again, and the trees thin out. She goes on more and more cautiously, until they're within sight of their goal — the stable on the hill. Then she makes Tirian get down in the grass so he can see where the sentry is. Jill and Eustace hide in a clump of trees about forty feet from the guard, and Tirian (he's disguised as a Calormene Lord) goes boldly out.
While Tirian is getting the sentry quietly out of the way and rescuing Jewel (the Unicorn) from behind the stable, Jill sees an opportunity to sneak into the stable itself. It's pitch black inside, but she strikes a light, and all that's there is an old donkey with a bundle of lion's skin tied to his back. She threatens him with her knife and says he'd better come along, but as it turns out, Puzzle is very fed up with the stable and glad to go. She rejoins the others as they're sneaking away, giving them a fright because they've noticed she's missing.
Once they're safely away, she tells them her story. Eustace is very angry at first, but impressed as hell when she's finished talking. He thinks if she were a boy she'd be knighted, and asks Tirian about it — Tirian responds that if she were a boy she'd be whipped for disobeying orders, and in the dark they can't tell if he's pleased or not. Then he draws his sword to cut off Puzzle's head, telling Jill to stand clear. She refuses, begging him not to; Puzzle is very sorry, and anyway, she has her arms around his neck. Tirian tells her she's the bravest and most wood-wise of his subjects, but also the most malapert and disobedient. However, he relents, and Puzzle is allowed to live. They decide to go to meet the Dwarfs whose drums they can hear on the road.
* +200 confidence in her own abilities
* +50 disinclination to go along with things she's not okay with
* +50 missing Eustace and Tirian
