Memory #19: Underland Without The Queen

The Witch is dead. Jill, Rilian, Eustace and Puddleglum are recovering from the fight in Rilian's apartments. They treat Puddleglum's burn and start to make their plans for escape; Rilian says that there are a number of ways back to the surface, but the only way that doesn't require a ship back across the Sunless Sea (and therefore the cooperation of the Earthmen) is the new outlet that was meant for the invasion of Overland, which is nearly finished and only a few miles away. As they talk, a noise begins outside, so gradually that by the time they notice it, it's a great swell of voices, and a steady roar that isn't voices.
They go to the window to see what's happening, and see a great red glow coming from somewhere on the far side of the city. The streets are filled with people lurking and darting furtively about. And it's loud. The noise is shaking the whole city. This is all in stark contrast to the near-complete darkness, total silence and close-packed, stolid crowds of before. They also see ships coming toward them. They realize the ships are driving up the streets; the sea is rising, flooding the city. Puddleglum and Rilian realize right away that the Witch must have had spells tied to the city so her death would immediately cause its destruction.
They get ready to leave with some haste. Puddleglum suggests that Rilian wear the armor, but he can't bear to after having ridden in it as a vehicle of enchantment and slavery for so long. He does, however, go to fetch his shield. When he comes back he shows that where it had once been black, it is now turned silver and has a red lion rampant across it. He suggests that everyone kneel and kiss Aslan's likeness, and get ready to part as friends, which they do. Jill and Eustace shake hands and apologize for sniping at each other on the journey, and call each other by their first names for the first time.
The party quickly makes their way to the stables, noticing with puzzlement on the way that people are letting off fireworks somewhere. Jill and Rilian calm and saddle Coalblack and Snowflake (Rilian and the Witch's horses respectively.) Jill, who has been so on edge the whole time underground, is totally fearless when it comes to the horses; she mounts Snowflake, pulling Puddleglum up behind her, and Rilian mounts Coalblack, with Eustace riding pillion. The Prince leads them furtively through the city, avoiding groups of Earthmen. He's trying to bring them around to the left of the glow that they assume must be a fire, onto high ground.
Around and behind them, buildings are collapsing and ships are smashing up against the streets. Even above the din, from the direction of the glow, they can hear cat-calls, shrieks and even laughter, and see fireworks going off, although they can't guess why. Every now and then they run into a group of Earthmen, but the Prince is able to drive them off by bluff charging them. Hundreds or even thousands of the gnomes are making their way toward the red glow, and Puddleglum and Rilian think it must be to cut the party off up ahead. They decide to ambush one to see what's really going on -- Jill is afraid the others will rush to its rescue, and says so. They catch one anyway and demand to know what's happening; the gnome says he'll tell them anything if they don't tell the Queen he's squealed. Rilian announces that he's killed the Queen. The creature is clearly astonished, and says, "Why then your Honour is a friend!"
